Chimney Sweeping/Cleaning
Chimney sweeping is a four step process: preparation, process, inspection and documentation.
- 1. Preparation: Before we start cleaning, we make sure that all your property is protected from damage. Our sweeps wear protective gear and put down tarps and drop cloths, and use a vacuum to prevent excessive dust and debris from spreading.
- 2. Process: Our cleaning process includes selecting the right tool for your chimney for the best results. We push our brushes through the flue several times to remove soot, ash and creosote—the harmful materials that block your chimney. Smoke chambers, smoke shelves, lentils, fireboxes and damper frames are then cleaned, and all debris is removed.
- 3. Inspection: Every finished sweep includes a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) level one inspection. As long as your construction allows it, we can do both a visual and camera-assisted inspection of both the interior and exterior of the chimney.
- 4. Documentation: We will always supply you with a documented report of the inspection.
Chimney Rebuilding
D.M. Thompson Masonry Restoration rebuilds your chimney either at the roofline or from the ground up. Roofline chimney rebuilding is for chimneys that have cracked and damaged masonry from the force of the elements. This requires removing the chimney above the roofline and replacing it using new material that matches the original chimney as closely as possible. We also replace flue tile and install sloping concrete crowns to provide better water drainage.
Heavily neglected or deteriorated chimneys may require complete rebuilding. After you approve the materials, we will tear down your entire chimney and rebuild it from the ground up. This service also includes cleanup as well as installation of flue tiles and sloping concrete. We will also provide estimates for additional work, such as the potential need to replace your smoke chamber or firebox.
Crown Repair
We can repair or replace your crown after determining what is necessary. If there are only minor cracks or flaws we can install CrownGuard, a permanent, waterproof membrane that is much more resistant to the elements. If the elements have created severe damage and cracking to your crown, we will replace it entirely.
Chimney Caps
Chimney caps fit over flues and crowns to prevent rain water and animals from entering. The lack of a chimney cap means water can much more easily enter your chimney and cause water damage. Chimney caps reduce this threat, as well as reduce the risk of animals (and their droppings) entering your chimney and creating terrible smells and bacteria.
Fireplace and Furnace Liners
Gasses emanating from your furnace or fireplace contain water that can easily damage clay tile liners. A common service for D.M. Thompson Masonry Restoration is to install stainless steel and aluminum liners for furnaces and fireplaces.
